Congressman to present virtual MLK speech

Sanford Bishop to give MLK address

U.S. Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr. will deliver this year's MLK address at 2 p.m. Wednesday via Zoom. He is serving his 14th term representing middle and southwest Georgia's Second Congressional District.  

College President Susanna Baxter said the choice of Bishop as speaker was an easy one.

Bishop is a native of Mobile, Alabama, and the son of the late Dr. Sanford D. Bishop Sr., the first president of Bishop State Community College in Mobile, and the late Minnie S. Bishop, a librarian.  

He earned degrees from Morehouse College and Emory University Law School, then enlisted in the U.S. Army, successfully completing basic training at Fort Benning, Georgiaand enrolling in the Advanced Reserve Officer Training Corps. 

Bishop was first elected to Congress in 1992 after serving in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1977-1990 and in the Georgia Senate from 1991-1992.  

He resided in Columbus, Georgia, from 1972 to 1996, where he was the primary partner in the law firm of Bishop and Buckner, P.C. 

Bishop has served on the House Committee on Appropriations since 2003. He also was chairman of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee. He is co-chair of the Congressional Military Family Caucus, the vice chair of the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee and a senior member of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee. 

Bishop has received numerous awards including the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, given to Eagle Scouts for distinguished career achievement.  

He also has been recognized by organizations including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Child Advocacy Coalition, National Guard Association of the United States, National Infantry Association, Georgia Association of Educators, Georgia Municipal Association, Georgia Council for the Arts and Fraternal Order of Police. 

He and his wife, Vivian Creighton Bishop, live in Albany. They have a daughter, Aayesha J. Reese, and a granddaughter, Londyn.

A new tradition has begun at LaGrange College. Graduating seniorwho have received their first full-time, post-graduation job offer or have been admitted to graduate school may ring the Chapel bell to celebrate their accomplishments.  Complete the online form to receive instructions on how to ring the bell between the hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays when the college is open. Edmondson Parlor, aka “The Den, has re-opened for student use. With a continued focus on making the college student-centered, President Baxter partnered with an anonymous donor to secure funding to renovate the space.  Located on the second floor just inside the front door, The Den has comfy furniture, oversized chairs, study space, game tables and new artIt is open daily from 8 a.m. until midnightStudents are reminded to practice social distancing and to wear masks in the new space.
